NTERVIEW- with Ruben Alvarez- Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu Black Belt

Hi Ruben, introduce yourself: name, age, team, time training:

Ruben Alvarez JR, 23,Fightsports, training Jiu Jitsu for 8 years.

What is your biggest achievement to date?

This year was winning the Mmac light weight absolute

I know you’re close friends, and coach alongside Vagner Rocha, do you have any plans of opening up your own academy?

Yes I am in the process of opening up a second location with Vagner Rocha and being the head instructor at that academy.

Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport, it’s a lifestyle. What influence has Jiu Jitsu had on your life?

Jiu jitsu is a primary influence in my life. All my friends and everything came from BJJ. I even met my girlfriend through Jiu Jitsu.10268582_10203535329572245_3204560469797239777_n

Have you had any BJJ related injuries? If so, how did they happen/how long were you out for? Any advice for anyone experiencing big injuries?

Yes I have I broke my leg doing jiu jitsu. I was suppose to be out a year but I came back in 6 months. Stay positive and surround yourself with people who will lift you up. Luckily I had Cyborg always giving me words of encouragement through that time.

What’s your game like? (Your go to attacks/positions)

I’m know mostly for my leg locks and attacks. But I try to be well rounded.

What do you spend your time doing outside of Jiu Jitsu?

Right now if I’m not doing BJJ I’m usually lifting or if I’m not doing that. I’m long boarding or doing something active

What are your goals for the future?

My goals are to be able to change someone’s life like BJJ has changed mine. Also I wanna have a successful competition career and a successful gym.

Thanks for your time Ruben. Any shout outs?

Yes I want to give a shout out to my instructors cyborg Abreu and Vagner Rocha. With out those guys being influences on me I dunno where I’d be. Also shout out to all my Fightsports & Vagner Rocher MA family. My sponsors ‘Brawl and Maul’ and ‘Furia Jiu Jitsu’ and my Strength and Conditioning gym ‘Elite U’. I also want to thank God for all the blessings he’s giving me from Jiu Jitsu. Last one is my family for all the support they give. Oss

  • Hi Ruben, I just saw the video where you “outed” the fake bjj black belt, and want to let you know that I have SO MUCH respect for you. I saw the behind the scenes interview you did with Danny Segura and you tried really hard to be good to that guy – out of respect for the “fake guy” AND for the respect that we all assume is a shared brotherhood with people training BJJ. I have been training for 3 years and just got my blue from Ryron Gracie at the Gracie Academy. I was more proud of getting my blue in BJJ than when I got my black belt in tang soo do. I am 43 and have a career that takes at least 60 hours out of my week. I will never be a black belt in BJJ most likely – due to a lack of physical skill and a lack of time. I can only train 3-4 times per week, and it’s just too difficult. To watch a joker that cannot even shrimp or shoulder roll claiming to be a black belt makes me sick. I would give anything to be a black belt, but I just don’t know if I can ever ACTUALLY get there. But I would rather be a legit blue (I still suck at rolling, but I do love it, lol) than a fake black belt. You, my friend, are legit and have a ton of respect for what you did!
